Experts keep saying it: getting active has health benefits. But did you know that when practiced outdoors, physical activity provides even more benefits? Find out why we should take advantage of each season and go play outside!

REDUCE STRESS

It’s proven: practicing outdoor physical activities is one of the best remedies to combat the effects of stress. In fact, studies show a close link between contact with nature and a decrease in the level of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress. The outdoors also boosts endorphin levels and the production of dopamine, hormones that contribute to good mood. Playing outside also allows you to escape and take a step back towards yourself and your worries.

PREVENT DEPRESSION

The beneficial effect of nature on mental well-being is scientifically recognized. According to several studies, outdoor activities are an effective way to prevent depression. Some of these studies even suggest that moving around in a natural environment can reduce ruminations – that is, rehashing negative emotions or thoughts from the past – which are associated with the risk of depression. Nothing like, therefore, that an open air bath to fight against this “little hamster” that turns!

FACILITATE SLEEP

Playing outdoors increases exposure to natural light and therefore helps maintain healthy bones. In fact, being exposed to this luminosity promotes the production of vitamin D. The latter helps the body absorb calcium from food and maintain adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Therefore, it plays a vital role in bone strength and in the prevention of osteoporosis. An asset when you know that many people aged 50 and over do not meet their vitamin D needs!
